Hey I told ya guys we’d be doing something actually scary this week. Stephen king is known as an amazing writer and a lot of his books have become incredible movies. And no the idea for this review wasn’t inspired by the nostalgia critics recent video, “Top 11 best Stephen King movies,” in fact we almost cancelled this review to do a short called “Incel,” but to my surprise he didn’t actually include this in the countdown! So here we are, let’s get into the next chapter in spook month!
In a small town in Maine, a seemingly idealistic family is living a seemingly idealistic life. The father, Vic, is a marketing mogul who is constantly out town for days on end, which leaves his wife Donna, hey that’s my moms name, to seek out some much needed, uh, love. Yep! She’s a common WHORE! And yes the father finds out about this, but not until also finding out about a local mechanic they can use to fix Donnas malfunctioning car. While visiting said local mechanic at his farm house, they see their big dog, a saint bernard named Cujo! But, as shown earlier, the poor guys been bitten by a rabid bat.
Anyways, eventually there comes the previously mentioned scene where Vic finds out that Donna’s been cheating on him. Later that same day the dad has to go out of town, and then the mother goes to pick up her son, Tad, a sickly little boy who sometimes has seizures, from school and take her car to the mechanic guy. However, at the same time Cujo kills everyone at the mechanics house. By the time they get there, the place looks abandoned. Suddenly Cujo attacks, and they manage to shut the doors and roll up the windows! And now they must survive.
That night, Vic tries to call his family, but they obviously can’t answer the phones, since it’s the 1980s and cell phones don’t exist yet. The next day things are starting to get real hot inside the car, literally. It’s gotten so hot that they drank an entire canister of water and Tad has taken off his shirt and pants. The dog attacks again and this time the seizure kicks in, however Donna is able to calm him down. She’s decided to have enough, or maybe she’s just going stir crazy, and decides to go and try and attack Cujo. This goes south though as for a brief bit of time Cujo actually gets in the car, but Donna is able to force him back out using that now empty canister of water. But, she does get a bit of her leg chomped off, and now that she’s dehydrated, tired, and bleeding, she loses consciousness in pretty well shot scene where the camera spins around the inside of the car, slowly getting faster, giving the audience the same confused and distorted feeling that Donna must be feeling at the moment as she slowly loses consciousness.
That night Vic realizes that there has to be something wrong, seeing how she hasn’t answered his calls for two days now, and decides to go back to see if anything happened. On his way back the guy that Donnas been sleeping with also returns, but in a rage finds out she’s not there, so he tears up the house. When Vic returns to see it in shambles, and his wife and kid missing, he assumes that they were kidnap and tells the cops they were last scene going to the mechanics and to check there. Things seem to be winding down here, and I’m sure the cop will save the day, so we’re gonna take a break for a bit.
Hey look I actually have a reason for this, as for once these characters aren’t terrible. Our main character Donna is the one that we follow most of the time throughout this movie. The acting is actually pretty good, and she isn’t just a generic cheating whore. She does love Vic, and her family life, and that kinda makes the fact that she does what she does worse, but she’s at least not very unlikeable. Tads just a normal kid, yeah, but the acting is great and he really sells it as a kid whos terrified and confused. So yeah, everything’s pretty good.
After the cop arrives, he gets attacked and killed by Cujo, but he did also drop his gun. In the meantime, Donnas checking Tad who has seemingly caught a bad case of dead, but turns out he is very faintly breathing! Donna knows she has to get out of there, and she notices a baseball bat on the ground outside. She books it to the bat, and starts bashing Cujos head with the bat, so many times in fact the bat snaps in half, but Cujo still stands and jumps up on her! I don’t quite know what happens next but, I think what happens is that he gets stabbed with the bat? If not then he just kinda, plops over dead.
Donna, being smart, grabs the cops dropped gun incase Cujo still isn’t dead. She smashes a window and gets her son out of there, carrying him inside the house. After a bit of CPR, Tad lives! Yay! But Cujo pulls a Jason Voorhees and jumps right through a window. God damn that is one hell of a strong dog! Anyways Donna finally kills the dog by shooting it with the cops gun! Vic arrives, runs over to them both, we get a family group hug, freeze frame and the end!
This film is pretty alright! It’s refreshing every now and then to see something good, at least with good pacing. The films an hour and a half but it goes by pretty fast. But you guys read the review, you guys should know how I feel about this little flick, I think it’s pretty good! Yeah, it’s no shining, I mean what could be? But this film is way better than it needs to be. So yeah, if you guys want to watch a nice horror movie this halloween, I do suggest this one! See you guys next week on spook month when we’re back to the basics!
