A Miser Brothers Christmas
Merry Christmas month everyone! Alright so, in all honesty I wanted to start the celebrations back on the second, but we had to do the Stephen Hillenburg thing, then we had to celebrate our one year anniversary, but now it’s christmas time! And reasonably that means it’s also time for christmas movies! Rankin Bass always made the most famous of these, such as Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer and Santa Claus is Coming to Town. However, a much less talked about stop motion film was released as a sort of, loving tribute, in 2008. So, let’s be the ones to talk about it!
The film starts with Mrs.Claus giving us some narration which leads into a flashback, telling us how the story started, with a terrible song. Well alright it’s not terrible, but, we’ll talk about it later. So santa’s looking around the north pole, checking on toy production, seeing how the baby reindeer are doing, all that good holly jolly shit. He then goes to a mechanics building, in which lies Tinsel, “The youngest elf ever to be santa’s chief mechanic.” That’s actually how they introduce this shadbase lookin elf.
She says that she made some sort of new sleigh, and then we transition over to the Miser brother houses, looking remarkably different than the ice castle and volcano they lived in before, but, really who gives a shit. They start getting under each others skins, but are reminded that they have to keep a calm head, since they’re going to a family reunion with mother nature and the rest of the Misers.
We’re introduced to our villain of the special, his real name is the north winds but fuck that his name is Wind Miser. He pretty clearly hates santa, and it’s agreed that if santa couldn’t do his job, Wind Miser would take over for him. We also learn the Miser brothers never got any presents, and then we get the only joke in the movie that actually made me laugh. Then the brothers are their usual selves, get into a fight, and ruin everything, leaving mother nature to remark how she wishes they would get along.
Back in the north pole, everything is set up for Santa to test drive the new sleigh Tinsel made. But, while doing so, Wind Miser sends his minions out to tamper with his sleigh, it starts to fall just as santa gets into the crossfire between a Snow and Heat Miser clash, so it makes it look like one of them hit him. Santa survives, just with a broken back, and can’t deliver the presents!
As punishment for what they did, or at least what they think they did, mother nature forces Snow and Heat Miser to deliver presents, and not Wind Miser. As you could probably assume, they don’t quite get along, until Mrs.Claus shows them that the whole reason they ever started fighting in the first place was a big misunderstanding, the brothers feel bad, and realize they’ve been on the naughty list every year because they fought all the time. So they decide to put aside their differences and save christmas!
These characters are, simple. Simple doesn’t mean bad though, they all have their own distinct personalities, Heat Miser is the hot head, Snow Miser keeps things chill, Santa is santa, Wind Miser is an ass kissing evil guy, all that simple stuff. Again, this is a kids christmas movie, I think that simple works fine here.
The voice acting is also pretty good, the only one I have a problem with is Snow Miser, and it’s really just an opinion, his voice is actually well done. The thing is that, they got the original voice actor for Heat Miser, even Mickey Rooney is back as santa, but sadly Dick Shawn, the original voice for Snow Miser, died back in 1987. The thing is that the voice they got to replace him was high pitched, while the original was low pitched. I know, nitpicking opinions here, it’s just weird to me. But really though, all around, simple, but well acted and good enough.
Man it is so weird seeing these characters moving as fluid as they do here. Seriously, I’m so used to seeing these guys move in that crude 1960s stop motion way, but here, it just looks to me like it’s an episode of robot chicken. Now that’s not really a complaint, the animation in this movie is good, and the “sets” are very vibrant and colorful without being annoying. They clearly took their time doing the stop motion here.
Alright so the song quality in this movie is rather all over the place, let’s take it one at a time. The opening song is annoying, high pitched voices yelling the same few lyrics over and over again. Then comes Wind Misers villain song, which is alright I guess, it’s no poor unfortunate soul or gaston song, but I don’t think we should be expecting that. Then comes the reprise of the Miser song, which is good, just, it’s not really original so I don’t think I should count it.
Then comes Mrs.Claus’ song about family and, it’s also pretty nice. It’s slower than the rest of the songs but I think it gets across the mood it’s going for. The rest of the songs are just them singing songs from earlier in the movie a second time. I’d say the soundtrack is, ok, it’s got a few good songs in there, and the rest are just meh. I almost wanna say that was intentional to Mimic rudolph, but I don’t quite think that’s the case.
So, Wind Miser, seeing that the Miser brothers are working together, decides to put an end to that swiftly, by having his minions put these weird little devices on the bottom of santa’s sleigh, so when the Misers try and get on it hits Heat Miser with some cold and Snow Miser with some hot, making them thing the other was just playing them for a fool so they could make it either a green or white christmas. This starts an all out war between Heat and Snow, along with their minions.
With the disaster going on outside, Santa comes downstairs, still with a bad back, and says that he has to deliver the presents himself. He goes off into the sky, and at about the same time Tinsel and everyone else find out that Wind Miser sabotaged the new sleigh, and santa could be in danger! The Misers hop on the new sleigh and ride off to save Santa, who at the moment is currently being sucked into a vortex created by Wind Miser.
Santa lets loose the reindeer so they don’t get sucked in, and the brothers make it to santa just in time. They work together to get santa and the toys on the new sleigh, but in the scuffle get stuck on the old sleigh and are about to get sucked into the vortex! Just in time the reindeer just, come back, and are able to get the Miser brothers to safety. Santa traps Wind Miser in a parachute, and they return to the north pole safely.
After finding out what Wind Miser did, Mother nature comes down and doles out some punishment. Several hundred thousand years of chores. I mean, kind of a low sentence for someone with two accounts of attempted murder, but whatever. So, since Santa still has his broken back, the Miser brothers deliver all the presents, and everyone has a Merry Christmas. The end!
So, much like the characters, this film is very simple. But again like the characters, that’s not a bad thing. It’s got nice music, nice animation, and even a nice message about family, working together, all that good stuff. And I can’t help but feel like there was just a lot of heart put into this movie, like a bunch of people got together and just wanted to honor these two men, as well as all the other people who worked on these movies, and thank them for bringing a lot of christmas cheer around the world. For a christmas movie, I think that’s a great thing to have, so I do recommend you watch it with family. See you guys next week for our true christmas special!
