Pentagon report warns that China may be preparing strike on US targets
The Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China may not roll off the tip of your tongue, but the recent Department of Defense report warns that China may be preparing for more than a trade dispute.
The report warns that the PLA (The Chinese People’s Liberation Army) is
“rapidly expanding its overwater bomber operating areas, gaining experience in critical maritime regions and likely training strikes against U.S. and allied targets”
while the Chinese air force has
“been re-assigned a nuclear mission” and that “The deployment and integration of nuclear capable bombers would, for the first time, provide China with a nuclear ‘triad’ of delivery systems dispersed across land, sea, and air.”
Interestingly enough, the report brings up concerns over possible attacks on U.S. satellites. It’s not an unwarranted claim either, as China successfully destroyed a weather satellite in 2007 and conducted a second test in 2014.
The report continues stating that China is improving it’s counterspace capabilities
“In addition to the development of directedenergy
weapons and satellite jammers, China is
also developing direct-ascent and co-orbital
kinetic kill capabilities”
While the existence of anti-satellite programs since 2007, the Chinese defense academics often publish articles covering counterspace technologies which stress the importance of destroying communications, navigation, and early warning satellites to “blind and deafen the enemy”
